So, I'm reading The Mayfair Moon by JA Redmerski, which [personal profile] eibbil_libbie graciously let me borrow and while I like it so far, I have one huge beef.

The first part of the book is set in Athens, GA, but the way this author describes the town, it sounds more like a place in south GA than Athens. And it bugs me. Not enough to make me quit reading, mind, but idk, could you have googled it?

The setting moved, now, and I'm starting to get into the book a little more so it was just a minor gripe.

I didn't know enough about Georgia to get that sliver under my skin about it, but I remember having to step away from a book for awhile because of a Huge Blatant No.

The chick had her main characters visiting the Okracoke Island lighthouse. She mentioned the visitor's center and the snack bar...when that particular lighthouse is seriously in someone's backyard.

Glad you're enjoying it even with the blech of messing up a location.

I think we're a lot alike that way. I usually write with google maps open if its not set someplace I've lived or someplace I've invented.

Yeah. Her sister gives off a serious reach-through-the-kindle-and-smack vibe.

I love Zia to bits.

I frequently have that reaction when watching The Mentalist...

That and... little things like.. there was an episode in Davis once and they were talking about the intersection of two streets that don't intersect. Or once Cho chased a guy past the Capitol and down under the bridge... that's easily two miles down a 'mall' type street. AND you can't get under the bridge like that unless you unlock a gate. Or when they drive to SF or Fresno and then are all.. we're going back to the office. Shit, that's a three hour drive no way are you going to do that multiple times a day. You'd camp out in the local precinct.

I always get thrown off by stuff like this, too. Any time I read something set in Chicago that wasn't written either by someone who lives here or who has done their research, I cringe and get kind of thrown out of the book.

I also read a book which was set in the area where I grew up and I spent a significant amount of time Googling places names and locations because nothing about the story felt like "home".

I remember starting that book and giving up after a while. I don't remember why. XD

No man, I get that with a LOT of YA books I read, especially the paranormal romance ones that have the annoying instaluv, triangles, and whiny emo heroines. Not that I'm bitter or anything. >_>

I've gotten to the point and read enough YA now that I know exactly what I dislike and can give up on a book before 50 pages. Which happens a lot.

Yeah. I can't even really take vampires seriously anymore.

Have you tried Bitten by Kelley Armstrong? I found it really interesting and liked the werewolf aspect, though the whole story was a touch too boring for me. But looking back, I think I might appreciate it more now after so many awful YA books because it's all about character development.

Oooh, and Sharp Teeth! I really enjoyed that one and I think I might have it up at [community profile] booking, too.

I am so the same in Across the Universe Jude gets on like this Boat to America like leaving from Liverpool and me and my ma just sat there going that's a a)dry dock boat b)it hasn't actually left the docks in years c)does not go out EVER to sea let alone the AMERICAS. And it's just like any time they do anything in Liverpool, it stangely enough is filmed in my old hometown which makes me what the fuck liek THAT'S NOT LIVERPOOL THEY DON'T EVEN LOOK SIMILAR.

But what can you do?

Also you should read Bitten, I loved it. And Kim Harrison! For werewolfy books.

There was an RP once set in the city I grew up in and I just...stalked it for a very short while because it was trainwreck wrong. Wroooooooooong. I was just sitting there going 'no, that place isn't there. I know because the place your thread claims to be is 20 minutes by bus that way and the place where it actually is IS RIGHT OUTSIDE MY DOOR.'

And then the giant blizzard of a couple years ago happened and apparently in this RP that was happening in real time, the city was shut down for almost two weeks when really we were back up and running that afternoon. For serious though, not doing research bugs the shit out of me especially because most of that stuff is just a google search away.
