So Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and I have no idea what I'm going to give up for Lent. Jeff says I should give up RP >.>

<.< It says something that I'm actually considering it. I should give up caffeine but with as stressful as work has been the last two weeks, there's no fucking way I'll survive pulling 12 hour days without soda.

I have to come up with something to give up myself. I was thinking about coffee.

I'm mostly upset that I'll be in Burney and not where I know a church to go to.

I'm gonna be on vacation for the first week and I'm like... ?

I could give up coffee but it might be rough, I don't drink enough soda for it to be worth it, or eat enough candy anymore.

Maybe I'll give up swear words...

I know! It's a good one. Feel free to steal the idea.

Can you switch out tea for the soda?

Ah! I understand this completely. I'm lucky that I have room in my cubicle to have a water kettle that I can plug in so I can have my tea since there only two flavors of bagged tea I like.

...

This does not stop me from stopping at the Exxon near my work once a week to buy out their 6 or 8 bottles of Barq's root beer that they have. It's good to have in reserve if I don't have the patience for waiting for the tea to brew or if I feel a migraine coming on.

Boo to them!

They did that when I taught, too. I used to have a small fridge and a coffeepot in my office and they made me get rid of them. I was so pissed. First they cited "insurance concerns" (which is why we had to get rid of our curtains in our classrooms, FFS) and then they went on about "using too much power". I was like, really? I'd be happy to have a payroll deduction to cover the cost of running my fucking coffeemaker.

Since you are trying to get pregnant, maybe you could give up something that will help you be in better shape for that? Giving up some kind of sweets or soda and replacing it with a healthy snack? Or giving up staying up late so you can be better-rested? idk.

It's the mom in me, sorry :P

I wouldn't give up caffeine cold turkey, you'll just feel like shit and want MORE of it. Maybe just have a little less each day. Alternatively you could switch to a sugar-sweetened soda like Mountain Dew Throwback, so at least you aren't getting the HFCS.

I ended up drinking soda again after YEARS of not drinking it because it's all that's in the vending machine and I don't really have a way to keep a gallon of sweet tea at school like I used to when I worked. I started feeling gross, so I've cut back to half a soda a day. I bought some Snapple tea (well, Joe bought it, and he accidentally bought diet, ew) and while I've had a few of them I think the artificial sweetener has upset my system so I'm not drinking anymore and now I'm stuck with a fucking case of diet Snapple I can't return.

It just... has a weird taste. And I know like, drinks like tea don't have a TEXTURE, but diet stuff feels, idk, thinner and unsatisfying and I'm just weird, I know. I'm okay with Splenda but unfortunately this is aspartame and that is just bitter to me.

YES. Let's do!

You can post if you like since I'm guessing Helen has some kind of plans for the day :) And, oh, he's probably finished tinkering with her wedding ring set by now and is done with his own as well. I'm thinking it kind of matches hers, but just a band without a stone.

Maybe instead of giving up caffeine, work on limiting it? No-more-than-x-cups-per-day or something?

When I was Catholic, I used to try to do something for Lent instead of sacrificing something--ie work a rosary/meditation into my daily routine or write something non-fandom every day. It gives you practice building healthy habits, and you still end up giving up unnecessary stuff (because the time for the new habit doesn't come from nowhere) but it feels more like accomplishing a thing instead of depriving yourself.

Hijackingtag. Oooooh I might do this, now just to find my rosary. I like this idea a lot.

I do not know what I will give up for lent at all. I think I might do that quiet prayer contemplation thing but I still feel like I should give up something. But the only real big vices I have are RP, buying DVDs aaaand coffee and chocolate but there is no way I am giving up chocolate. Ooooh cake. I eat cake. I can give up cake.

Im going to give up cake and do the rosary thing.

My thing is to stick to my diet. No gluten or dairy. It's going to help me stay healthier, and in a way (kinda) I'm giving up on things I do love. (CHEEEESE!!!!!)

Also smoking. If I can successfully not smoke for Lent, I can perhaps never smoke again.
